May Day is celebrated all over the world to commemorate the courage and sacrifices of those workers who laid down their lives in 1886 at Chicago for the cause and rights of the working class.
On this historic day, I would like to emphasize that the dignity and welfare of workers is enshrined in the noble teachings of Islam. Islam has enjoined upon us to follow the golden principles of equity and brotherhood. The Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him) provided a role model for treating the workers with love and respect. He advised the Muslims to settle and clear the wages of a worker before his perspiration dries up.
Our government is fully committed to uplift socio economic conditions of the worker so that they can play an important role for the progress and prosperity of the country. The Government has already started various programmes to improve the labour management and to ensure industrial peace for increasing productivity in a decent work environment. After 18th amendment in the Constitution, the workers welfare has been devolved to Provincial Governments, who are also vigorously initiating programmes for welfare of the workers and amendments, in various Labour Laws to bring them in harmony with the International Labour Standards.
On this day I would emphasize employers and workers to adopt modern means of production in order to successfully meet the new global challenges and ever-increasing competition in the world market. I pray to Almighty Allah that He may grant us the wisdom to respect and protect the rights of all people so that we can all join hands to make Pakistan a prosperous welfare Islamic state. Aamin!
